At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
