France will start stopping small boats in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the plan and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when French police were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
