Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
